Hybrid Sunscreens Inspired by Asia

ALPOL Cosmétique, a European manufacturer, launched three new SPF 50+ hybrid sunscreens this year, drawing inspiration from Asian beauty trends. The company states these products combine high UV protection with skincare and makeup benefits.

This move follows a growing demand in Europe for multifunctional sun care, a category that originated in Asia where sun protection is integral to daily beauty routines.

Clémence Thory, ALPOL Cosmétique's Marketing and Communications Manager, observed that this daily protection segment has seen rapid growth across Europe over the past two years, with pharmacy brands initially establishing the trend. Consumers are looking for sunscreens that also offer features such as hydration, radiance, or dark spot correction.

Product Portfolio and Formulation Strategy

The new portfolio includes a CC Cream SPF 50+, which ALPOL Cosmétique describes as combining complexion enhancement with UV protection. It features encapsulated pigments for a natural finish and a light texture. The company also introduced Perfectint Serum, an ultra-fluid tinted serum with SPF 50 protection, claiming to offer hydration through ectoine.

This product aims for a dry-powder finish. The third launch is Ultra-Fluid Anti-Dark Spot SPF 50+, which ALPOL Cosmétique says targets photoaging and hyperpigmentation by providing UV protection, preventing new UV-induced dark spots, and promoting a brighter appearance.

Angéline Tireau, Head of Foresight, Sunscreen and Testing, emphasized that for ALPOL Cosmétique, protection remains the primary function, even in hybrid formats.

Development Process and Market Implications for Asia

To support its development process, ALPOL Cosmétique invested in a Labsphere, an in-vitro SPF measurement system. This tool allows formulators to assess UV performance early, aiming to reduce development timelines and costs for customers, according to Tireau.

The company’s hybrid formulas primarily use organic UV filters, which it states are better suited for the light, sensorial textures consumers now expect. Mineral filters are reserved for specific uses, like sensitive skin, due to their richer textures and potential for a visible white cast. ALPOL Cosmétique views hybrid sun care as a significant growth area.

This strategy reflects the strong influence of Asian beauty practices on European product development, particularly the integration of sun protection with broader cosmetic benefits. This trend means Asian brands and manufacturers maintain a strong position in setting formulation benchmarks for this category.
