KKR Completes Ci Flavors Acquisition

Global investment firm KKR has acquired Japanese beauty and lifestyle company Ci Flavors. KKR purchased the platform from its existing shareholders, including consumer-focused investment firm L Catterton, founder Yusaku Horiuchi, Ebeauty Group, and Yanagi Capital Partners. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed by the parties.

This transaction marks L Catterton's exit from its investment in Ci Flavors, which began in 2022. Both Mr. Horiuchi and Ci Flavors CEO Yoshiaki Okura will reinvest in the company alongside KKR, maintaining a stake in the platform's future.

Ci Flavors' Market Presence

Ci Flavors, established in 2011, operates a portfolio of beauty and lifestyle brands. Its product lines include haircare, skincare, body care, and other lifestyle items. Key brands under Ci Flavors include &Honey, 8 The Thalasso, Unlabel, Theratis, and Moroccan Beauty.

The company manages various operational channels, such as brand sales, OEM manufacturing, direct-to-consumer services, e-commerce, and department store retail. Ci Flavors also sources ingredients and materials globally. The platform has developed a strong market presence in Japan's haircare sector and has expanded its sales across other Asian markets and North America.

Growth Strategy Outlined

KKR states it plans to support Ci Flavors' continued growth in Japan and internationally. Eiji Yatagawa, Partner and Head of Japan Private Equity at KKR, said the firm will use its global network in the consumer sector. KKR also plans to leverage its operational expertise and investment experience to support the company's expansion.

Ci Flavors CEO Yoshiaki Okura indicated the partnership will accelerate the company’s next growth phase. This includes international and category expansion, investment in talent and organizational capabilities, and strategic mergers and acquisitions to strengthen its market position.

Implications for Asia's Beauty Economy

This acquisition highlights sustained investor interest in established beauty platforms within Asia. Ci Flavors' existing presence in Asian markets beyond Japan suggests KKR may seek to expand these operations further. For beauty brands operating in Asia, this could mean increased competition from a well-capitalized platform, particularly in the haircare and skincare categories.

OEM manufacturers in the region might see new opportunities as Ci Flavors pursues international expansion and category growth. The deal also demonstrates that multi-channel and multi-brand strategies remain attractive to global private equity firms seeking growth in the Asian beauty economy.
