Ulta Beauty's Data-Driven Wellness Push

Ulta Beauty is expanding its wellness product range, specifically targeting the sexual wellness category for mature women. Lauren Brindley, Ulta Beauty's chief merchandising and digital officer, stated at a recent Retailer Influencer CEO Forum that the company uses its extensive customer database to identify unmet consumer needs.

The retailer's 47 million active customers, who drive about 95% of its sales, showed significant interest in wellness brands. This data revealed a high demand for products among older female customers, a segment often overlooked. Ulta Beauty has partnered with Respin, a sexual wellness brand co-founded by Hollywood star Halle Berry, to address this market.

Addressing Underserved Needs in Sexual Wellness

Halle Berry, speaking at the forum, shared her personal experience with perimenopause and menopause, highlighting a lack of information and suitable products for women navigating these life stages.

Respin, co-founded by Berry and Ally Tam Tumasova, was developed in collaboration with Joylux, an intimate-wellness technology company, to create products for women experiencing these symptoms.

Ulta Beauty's expansion into this category involves a two-part approach: analyzing customer data and ensuring sales associates are trained to discuss and explain these products comfortably to shoppers. Brindley noted that customer trust in Ulta Beauty's ability to offer safe, rigorously tested, and high-quality products was crucial for this new category entry.

The company's predominantly female leadership team, many in their 40s and 50s, also brings a personal connection to this initiative.

Gap's Heritage-Focused Reconnection

While Ulta Beauty enters new categories, Gap is reconnecting with popular culture by emphasizing its brand heritage. At the same forum, Zac Posen, Gap Inc.'s executive VP and creative director, and Faby Torres, global chief marketing officer, discussed this strategy.

Posen, who joined Gap in May 2024 at CEO Richard Dickson's invitation, focuses on designing the brand's story, not just products. Gap, a 57-year-old brand, aims to reaffirm its influence on retail, culture, and community, as seen in campaigns like Katseye and its new GapBag collection, the company's first dedicated handbag line.

Torres, also appointed in May 2024, highlighted how many consumers have personal memories tied to the Gap brand, extending beyond clothing items like hoodies or jeans.

Lessons for Asia's Beauty Industry

The strategies from Ulta Beauty and Gap offer insights for Asia's beauty sector. Asian brands can use customer data to identify and enter underserved categories, similar to Ulta Beauty's move into sexual wellness for mature women.

Brands in markets like Japan or South Korea, with rapidly aging populations, could develop new product lines for specific life stages by listening to consumer needs and building trust.

Additionally, established Asian beauty brands can draw on their cultural heritage and authentic brand identity to create compelling new product launches or marketing campaigns that resonate deeply with consumers. This approach helps brands expand their market presence and connect with evolving consumer demands across the region.
