Global First for AI Governance

Korean beauty firm APR announced on Tuesday it has obtained two international certifications for its artificial intelligence operations: the ISO/IEC 42001 for AI management systems and the AI Trust Mark. Both were awarded by the Norwegian certification body Nemko.

APR states it is the first beauty company worldwide to secure both of these distinctions, which validate its approach to AI governance and product reliability. The certifications cover both the company's overarching AI management framework and the specific AI applications within its beauty devices.

System-Wide AI Management Standards

To achieve the ISO/IEC 42001 certification, APR implemented 46 AI management documents, structured across seven distinct layers. These documents specifically address the company's AI-powered personalized care services.

Individual departments within APR are now responsible for identifying and managing AI-related risks, while a central management system oversees company-wide compliance. This system integrates with APR’s existing ISO 9001 quality management system and its Information Security Management System, ensuring a cohesive approach to operational standards.

AI Trust Mark for Device Reliability

The AI Trust Mark was granted specifically for the AI care mode featured in APR’s Medicube AGE-R’s Booster Pro X2 beauty device. This mode analyzes user skin conditions and accumulated usage data to suggest tailored care routines and stimulation levels. The product employs a hybrid AI architecture, avoiding reliance on a single AI model's output.

It also incorporates predefined safety limits for intensity and treatment duration, with an automatic switch to a rule-based process if system failures occur. The AI provides recommendations, but users retain final control over selections.

This mark evaluates product reliability against global AI regulations, including the EU AI Act and the US National Institute of Standards and Technology’s AI Risk Management Framework.

Implications for Beauty Tech Development

APR intends to continue integrating AI technology into its beauty devices, expanding personalized care features based on individual skin conditions and usage histories. An APR official stated that securing these certifications confirms their AI management system meets international benchmarks.

This move sets a precedent for other Korean and Asian beauty technology companies, indicating a growing emphasis on transparent, accountable, and safe AI development in consumer devices. Brands may find increased pressure to demonstrate similar levels of AI governance and product reliability to build consumer trust and meet evolving global regulatory expectations.
