US Demand Fuels China's US$1.3 Billion Beauty Accessory Exports
Chinese hair product shipments to the United States grew 12.4% in the first half of 2026, reaching US$1.3 billion, driven by social media trends and manufacturing hubs.

Chinese Exports Climb
Chinese exports of beauty accessories, including wigs and press-on nails, are seeing a significant increase in the United States. Data from customs indicates that hair product exports from China to the US reached US$1.3 billion during the first six months of 2026. This represents a 12.4% rise compared to the same period last year.
Based on current trends, total hair product exports for the year are projected to exceed the US$2.3 billion recorded in 2025. This growth is largely attributed to demand generated through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, where influencers frequently showcase new hair and nail styles.
Manufacturing Hubs Drive Growth
The expansion is underpinned by China's specialized manufacturing centers. Xuchang, recognized as China's wig capital, employs approximately 300,000 individuals in its hair industry. Joe Wu, an exporter operating from Xuchang, anticipates a 40% growth in his sales this year, primarily from US buyers engaging via social media applications.
Similarly, Donghai county, which boasts nearly 25,000 businesses producing press-on nails, is also experiencing a surge. Zhang Da, who owns a 200-worker factory in Donghai, reported that exports now account for 7% of his company's total revenue, a notable increase from late 2025, with a substantial portion directed to the US market.
Competitive Advantage and Digital Reach
Chinese manufacturers maintain a strong competitive position due to their economies of scale and integrated supply chains, enabling them to outperform rivals in other regions like Southeast Asia. For example, the labor-intensive process of individually tying hair strands for wigs is often outsourced to North Korea, while some raw hair is sourced domestically.
The influence of social media on consumer demand is clear: hair products claimed 17 of the top 20 spots in US fashion accessory sales rankings on TikTok in August, according to Fastmoss data. The highest-selling item was a glueless, pre-bleached straight-hair wig.
Implications for Asian Beauty
The sustained growth in Chinese beauty accessory exports to the US highlights China's unique manufacturing capabilities, driven by vast scale and continuous product refinement. For other Asian beauty accessory manufacturers, this trend suggests increasing competitive pressure, particularly in volume and cost-sensitive segments of the US market.
Asian beauty brands and retailers may need to reassess their sourcing strategies or concentrate on premium and niche markets where differentiation beyond price is crucial.
The strong US consumer demand and China's established supply chain also indicate that potential trade measures may not significantly alter this export flow, maintaining China's pivotal role in the global beauty accessory supply chain for the foreseeable future.
