Shanghai Plaza Expansion Adds Significant Retail Footprint

Hang Lung Properties is expanding its Shanghai Plaza property, adding 6749 square meters of new and reconfigured commercial and public space. The project, known as Pavilion, is scheduled to open in September 2026. This expansion includes approximately 4300 square meters dedicated to retail operations and 645 square meters for outdoor leisure, called the Art Pavilion.

The company states this development will increase Shanghai Plaza’s total retail footprint by about 13 percent. Shanghai Plaza currently encompasses over 210,000 square meters of floor area, housing more than 100 international luxury fashion brands and dining businesses.

New Luxury Brands and Enhanced Lifestyle Offerings

The Pavilion project will introduce 27 new luxury brands to the Shanghai market. Among these are Balmain, Berluti, Brunello Cucinelli, Dunhill, Hublot, John Lobb, Messika, Montblanc, Piaget, Thom Browne, Tod’s, and Zegna. Hang Lung Properties notes several brands will launch market-first concepts within the new space.

Borsalino will open its first official boutique in Greater China, while Brunello Cucinelli initiates its first flagship store in mainland China. Messika plans to debut its latest store format in Greater China, and Hublot will launch an exclusive national flagship store.

The expansion also broadens the center's appeal with about 20 new restaurants, including Michelin-recommended venues and brands making their Shanghai debut. A 1080 square meter rooftop garden is slated for a Q4 2026 opening, designed with an ‘urban resort’ concept.

Implications for Asia's Luxury Beauty Market

This significant expansion of luxury retail space in Shanghai demonstrates a continued investment in high-end consumer destinations within China. For beauty brands targeting affluent consumers in Asia, such developments represent new opportunities for market entry or increased visibility.

The addition of 27 luxury brands and diverse lifestyle offerings creates a concentrated environment for premium shoppers. Beauty companies seeking to establish flagship stores or secure prime retail positions in top-tier Chinese cities should monitor these expanded luxury hubs.

The integration of dining and leisure components also supports a broader luxury consumer experience, which can benefit co-located beauty retail by drawing a larger, engaged audience.
