Increased Capital for Growth Initiatives

Hindustan Unilever (HUL) plans a significant increase in its capital expenditure, raising it from approximately 2 percent to 3 percent of its annual turnover. This strategic adjustment aims to drive faster growth across India by focusing on premiumization, boosting consumer consumption, and expanding into new product categories.

Under its “Winning in New India” strategy, HUL will allocate more than 75 percent of its future capital spending towards initiatives designed for both growth and operational efficiencies.

Targeting Premium and Digital Channels

The heightened investment will specifically target premium brands, enhance the company's digital capabilities, and strengthen its presence in quick commerce channels. HUL has identified adjacent, high-growth categories as key expansion areas, including specialized skincare and male grooming.

The company also plans further development within its existing hair care portfolio and other segments that currently show lower market penetration.

Acquisitions Bolster Category Entry

Hindustan Unilever has also leveraged strategic acquisitions to accelerate its entry and strengthen its exposure to these newer, high-growth businesses. A notable example is its acquisition of Minimalist, a digital-first skincare brand.

This approach allows HUL to quickly integrate innovative brands and adapt to the evolving competitive landscape shaped by direct-to-consumer models and digital retail.

Implications for India's Beauty Landscape

This increased capital commitment shows HUL's intention to defend and expand its leadership in India's rapidly changing consumer market. The focus on premium beauty and personal care categories highlights the intense competition driven by agile digital-first brands and the rise of new shopping channels.

For other beauty and personal care companies operating in India, this move signals a more aggressive competitive environment, particularly in online retail and specialized segments like skincare and male grooming.
