MAC Cosmetics Unveils Basquiat-Inspired Range
MAC Cosmetics, an Estée Lauder Companies brand, has introduced a new six-product makeup collection. The range draws inspiration from the late American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Basquiat gained recognition for his neo-expressionist style, characterized by emotional and figurative art with rough brushwork.
He rose to prominence as a street graffiti artist in New York and passed away at age 27 in 1988. The collection's release occurs before an upcoming Netflix documentary about Basquiat's life. This initiative demonstrates MAC's strategy of linking brand identity with cultural figures to engage specific consumer segments.
Product Lineup and Pricing Details
The Basquiat-inspired collection includes several items. The MACximal Silky Matte Lipstick is available for US$35 in shades like Ruby Woo-ster and Bowery Brown. Oil Effect Eye Paint retails at $30, offered in Oil Slick, Basquiat Blue, and 1982 shades. The range also features Pastel Painting Eye + Face Chalk for $30, in Royal Blueprint and Everlasting.
This chalk-like powder provides buildable color for eyes and face. Additionally, a special edition Pigment, a concentrated loose color powder, costs $29. Rounding out the collection are accessories. The Basquiat Artist Brush Set is priced at $120. A special edition Famous Bag, designed to hold makeup tools, sells for $50. The full collection is available for purchase on maccosmetics.com.
Strategic Context and Asia Market Relevance
This launch follows MAC Cosmetics appointing American singer-songwriter Chappell Roan as the face of its 2026 Viva Glam campaign in May. Roan also serves as a Brand Ambassador for the company. The Viva Glam initiative donates 100% of sales from its specific lipsticks and lip glosses to organizations that champion equality globally.
For Asian beauty retailers and brands, such collaborations demonstrate a strategy for engaging consumers through cultural relevance. Observing how these themed collections perform can inform product development and marketing approaches in regional markets, particularly concerning artist collaborations and limited-edition releases.
This approach can drive consumer interest and offer new avenues for brand storytelling in competitive Asian beauty markets.
