AI for Cosmetic Formulation

Coptis, a software publisher specializing in formulation and regulatory compliance, launched two AI-powered innovations: Purple and Document Reader. These tools debuted at the company's annual Users Club, held in Paris on October 13, 2026.

Designed for R&D, formulation, and regulatory affairs teams, the new offerings aim to accelerate cosmetic product development and streamline technical data management. Purple, described as a "Prompt-to-Formula" AI agent, integrates with existing Coptis solutions.

It utilizes each company's proprietary raw material data and structured information, combined with Coptis' extensive knowledge base. This approach ensures regulatory compliance is built into the product development process from its initial stages. Coptis emphasized that Purple does not rely on external general-purpose large language models.

Automating Raw Material Data

The second innovation, Document Reader, automates the creation of raw material records within the Coptis solution. This tool processes supplier PDF documents, extracting relevant information to populate record fields automatically. It then renames and files the documents in the company's library.

The AI reads supplier documents, extracts critical data, and cross-checks it against the customer's specific settings and Coptis' reference data, which includes properties, solubility, and alerts.

Document Reader pre-populates raw material records with key details such as INCI breakdowns, traces, alerts, and natural origin indicators, adhering to standards like ISO 16128 and COSMOS.

Future Enhancements and Company Vision

Coptis plans to introduce further enhancements for Document Reader, including source traceability with references to specific pages and passages, support for multiple documents and file formats for a single raw material, and the ability to update existing records.

Pauline Caron, Chief Product Officer at Coptis, stated that the User Club serves as a platform for actively shaping solutions with customers. She added that Purple and Document Reader empower formulation and regulatory experts to innovate and work more efficiently, without compromising reliability or compliance.

Coptis noted that its customers, including cosmetic brands and contract manufacturers, require faster innovation, product personalization, waste reduction, and assured compliance.

Implications for Asia's Beauty Sector

For Asia's beauty industry, particularly in innovation-driven markets like South Korea and Japan, integrating AI tools for formulation and regulatory compliance could significantly reduce product development cycles.

This technology offers a pathway for Asian cosmetic brands and contract manufacturers to manage complex ingredient data and diverse market regulations more efficiently.

By automating raw material documentation and embedding compliance from the outset, companies can potentially accelerate product launches and ensure adherence to international standards such as ISO 16128 and COSMOS, which are crucial for export markets.

The adoption of such specialized AI solutions could provide a competitive advantage by improving data accuracy and reducing manual processing time in R&D departments across the region.
