Parfex Launches NovaSilk for Water-Based Fragrance
The Croda-owned company introduces two new technologies, NovaSilk and NovaSilk Clear, enabling alcohol-free perfumes with up to 20% fragrance load.

Parfex Expands Alcohol-Free Fragrance Offering
Parfex, a company within Croda’s Fragrance & Flavours division, has launched NovaSilk® and NovaSilk® Clear, two new technologies for alcohol-free, water-based fragrances. These innovations, developed by sister company Iberchem, respond to a growing market demand for "skinification" in fragrance, which integrates cosmetic sensory qualities into scent products. The company aims to provide brands with new creative possibilities that bridge perfumery and cosmetics.
NovaSilk Technologies and Performance
The NovaSilk® technology utilizes a macroemulsion, resulting in a milky or subtly pearlescent appearance and a fluid, enveloping texture. Conversely, NovaSilk® Clear employs a transparent microemulsion, offering a lighter and fresher sensory profile. Both systems can incorporate fragrance loads up to 20%, depending on the specific composition and product concept.
Olivier Coli, Parfex’s Application Laboratory Manager, stated that these technologies enable new delivery systems while maintaining strong olfactive performance. Eight-hour testing showed NovaSilk® offered a more consistent scent presence on skin and blotters compared to traditional ethanol-based formulas.
Sustainability and Creative Scope
Beyond performance, NovaSilk® technologies also support sustainability goals by eliminating alcohol from production and transport processes. This concentrated format helps optimize logistics, reduce storage needs, and lower the carbon footprint for brands.
Parfex positions these technologies as tools for perfumers to explore new parameters like texture, diffusion, and touch in fragrance development. The company also plans to utilize Croda’s cosmetic active ingredients to combine olfactive signatures with direct cosmetic benefits within single formulations.
Implications for Asian Beauty Markets
The introduction of alcohol-free, water-based fragrance technologies aligns with evolving consumer preferences in Asian beauty markets. Brands in countries such as South Korea and Japan, known for their focus on skincare and innovative textures, can utilize these systems to develop hybrid products like perfumed oils, hair mists, and skin-friendly body sprays.
This enables formulators to meet demand for gentler products that offer both scent and perceived skin benefits, potentially opening new categories for fragrance and personal care. The move offers a pathway for Asian brands to differentiate in a competitive landscape by integrating advanced sensory and formulation science.
