Shinsegae Group Divides E-commerce Operations

Shinsegae Group's e-commerce division, SSG.com, will separate into two distinct companies. The board approved spinning off its lifestyle business into a new platform, tentatively named Shinsegae Mall. This new entity will operate as a premium e-commerce destination for fashion, beauty, and lifestyle products.

The existing SSG.com will retain its name and focus solely on grocery shopping. Shinsegae Group stated Thursday that this restructuring aims to create specialized platforms. The split is scheduled to take effect on December 1, following a special shareholders meeting in late October for approval.

Rationale for Specialization

SSG.com leadership stated the division will sharpen expertise in each business area. They expect faster market response through independent decision-making within each new structure. This strategic shift reverses a 2019 decision that combined the online operations of E-mart and Shinsegae into a single integrated platform.

E-mart currently holds 65 percent of SSG.com, with Shinsegae owning the remaining 35 percent. Post-split, both E-mart and Shinsegae will hold identical stakes in both SSG.com and the newly formed Shinsegae Mall. Customers will continue to access Shinsegae Mall products via the SSG.com application, as Shinsegae Mall develops its own platform and external reach.

Implications for Asia's Beauty Sector

This move by Shinsegae Group shows a trend towards specialized e-commerce platforms in Asia. For beauty brands, a dedicated premium platform like Shinsegae Mall could mean new opportunities for targeted marketing and distribution.

Brands seeking to enter or expand within the South Korean market may find different vendor requirements or partnership structures compared to general marketplaces. This specialization could also intensify competition among beauty-focused online retailers in the region.

Other major retailers in Asia might observe this strategy to assess the viability of segmenting their own e-commerce offerings, especially for high-value categories like beauty.
