Sulwhasoo Launches in Japan with Isetan Shinjuku Pop-Up
The Korean luxury skincare brand establishes its initial retail presence at Isetan Shinjuku, setting the stage for broader online and offline distribution across Japan.

Sulwhasoo Enters Japanese Market
Korean luxury skincare brand Sulwhasoo has initiated its presence in Japan, commencing with a pop-up store at Isetan Shinjuku. This move establishes the initial retail footprint for the brand, which Amorepacific founded in 1997. The pop-up serves as a precursor to a broader distribution strategy, encompassing both online and traditional retail channels across the country.
Following this debut, Sulwhasoo products are now accessible through Isetan Shinjuku's physical store, Isetan Beauty Online, and major e-commerce platforms including Qoo10, Amazon Japan, and @Cosme Shopping. This multi-channel approach aims to connect with diverse Japanese consumers from the outset.
Brand Philosophy and Product Offerings
Sulwhasoo positions itself by blending traditional Korean herbal medicine, known as Hanbang, with contemporary skincare science. The brand emphasizes bio-processed ginseng extracts, drawing on over 60 years of dedicated ginseng research. At the Isetan Shinjuku pop-up, consumers can engage with the brand through product sampling and interactive experiences.
These include signature hand massages and bespoke gift-wrapping services. Key products highlighted at the launch include the Concentrated Ginseng Rejuvenating Cream and the First Care Activating Serum, showcasing Sulwhasoo's core offerings to the Japanese market.
Global Footprint and Strategic Expansion
Globally, Sulwhasoo currently operates more than 600 stores across 15 countries, reflecting its established international presence. The company stated that its entry into the Japanese market holds particular significance. This expansion allows Sulwhasoo to introduce its extensive ginseng research and its philosophy of Korean beauty to a wider audience of Japanese customers.
The brand plans a gradual expansion of its distribution network, incorporating additional online and offline sales points beyond its initial launch partners to solidify its market position.
Implications for Japan's Luxury Beauty Market
Sulwhasoo's entry into Japan, using both a high-profile department store pop-up and immediate availability across multiple e-commerce platforms, provides a clear strategy for other Asian luxury beauty brands considering this market. This integrated approach allows for both brand immersion and broad accessibility from day one.
For established local and international premium skincare brands in Japan, Sulwhasoo's arrival signals increased competition.
Its distinct focus on Hanbang principles and long-standing ginseng research could attract Japanese consumers seeking products with a strong heritage and specific ingredient claims, potentially influencing product development and marketing trends within the competitive beauty sector.
