Sulwhasoo Launches First Japan Department Store Pop-Up

Amorepacific's luxury brand Sulwhasoo has initiated its first official department store pop-up in Japan, located at Isetan Shinjuku in Tokyo. The event, which commenced on September 5 and will conclude on October 13 this year, is situated on the first floor of the department store's main building.

This move signals Sulwhasoo's intensified efforts to establish a stronger market presence in Japan. The brand, part of Amorepacific, currently operates more than 600 stores across 15 global markets. This expansion into a prominent Japanese retail space aims to introduce a wider consumer base to Sulwhasoo's offerings and brand philosophy.

Showcasing Ginseng Heritage and Korean Aesthetics

The Isetan pop-up highlights Sulwhasoo's signature products, including its concentrated ginseng rejuvenating cream and first care activating serum. This year marks the 60th anniversary of Amorepacific's ABC Ginseng Cream, which the company claims was the first cosmetic product worldwide to incorporate ginseng.

Visitors to the pop-up can also experience hand massages and the brand's "Jihambo" gift-wrapping service, inspired by traditional Korean bojagi cloth. Special promotions and programs are available for VIP customers, enhancing the luxury experience and brand engagement.

Expanding Omnichannel Reach in Japan

Ahead of its department store debut, Sulwhasoo has been building its brand recognition in Japan through various channels. In May, the brand conducted a pop-up event via the beauty platform Cosme.

This was followed by an August event for Japanese beauty media, retailers, and influencers, which included product sampling and promotional content in collaboration with Japanese beauty magazine Biteki Grand.

Complementing the physical presence at Isetan Shinjuku, Sulwhasoo is also broadening its digital distribution across Isetan Beauty Online, Qoo10, Amazon Japan, and Cosme Shopping, aiming for a comprehensive omnichannel strategy.

Strategic Implications for K-Beauty in Japan

A brand official from Sulwhasoo stated that their entry into Japan is significant, as it allows them to share their 60 years of ginseng research and Korean beauty philosophy with more consumers.

This strategic push into Japan, combining high-profile retail presence with diverse digital distribution, indicates Amorepacific's commitment to capturing a larger share of the Japanese luxury beauty market.

For other Korean beauty brands considering or executing similar expansions, Sulwhasoo's approach demonstrates the value of phased market entry, incorporating both online and offline engagement, and leveraging brand heritage to connect with local consumers.
