Babor Beauty Group Marks 70th Anniversary, Targets Gen Z in Travel Retail
The German luxury skincare brand will launch its Hydration & Electrolyte line in January 2027, featuring accessible messaging and colorful packaging to attract younger traveling consumers.

Seventy Years of Skincare Innovation
Babor Beauty Group, a German luxury skincare company, is observing its 70th anniversary this year. Founded in 1956 by biochemist Dr. Michael Babor in Cologne, the company is now based in Aachen, Germany. It remains under the ownership of the Vossen family, currently in its third generation.
Lara Schlüter, the company's Director of Travel Retail, recently spoke about Babor's enduring presence and future plans during the TFWA World Exhibition. Schlüter expressed pride in the company's journey and its status as a family-owned business.
The brand is recognized for its high-performance skincare and spa treatments, and it has developed into a global player in the beauty sector over seven decades.
Sustainability and Youth Engagement
Schlüter outlined Babor's continued focus on sustainability across its operations and product development. The company's production facility operates almost entirely without fossil fuels. Additionally, Babor is working to reduce the environmental impact of individual products. For instance, it has eliminated cellophane wrapping from its packaging.
The company follows a "green agenda" and tracks the ecological footprint of every product sold, aiming for improvements with each relaunch. This commitment extends to product design, with efforts to ensure packaging is more environmentally conscious while still being appealing to consumers.
New Product Line for Travel Retail
A key initiative for Babor involves attracting younger consumers, particularly Gen Z travelers. To this end, the company will introduce its new Hydration & Electrolyte line in January 2027. This product range combines accessible skincare messaging with vibrant, colorful packaging, a departure from Babor's traditional aesthetic.
Schlüter stated that Gen Z is increasingly important for the industry, and brands must offer these travelers suitable products at appropriate price points. She also mentioned a limited-edition set launched for the 70th anniversary, featuring a three-step routine with playful and self-explanatory packaging.
Implications for Asia's Travel Retail Market
Schlüter sees a significant opportunity for niche beauty brands like Babor to expand their presence in travel retail. She believes the new Hydration & Electrolyte line, alongside the brand's signature ampoules, can broaden product discovery in airport environments.
Travelers across all generations, not just Gen Z, are seeking new and engaging products that capture their attention. Babor aims to grow its global footprint within the travel retail channel, and Schlüter expressed optimism for 2027, citing positive feedback from both current and prospective retail partners received during the TFWA World Exhibition.
This strategy, focusing on Gen Z and accessible niche beauty, could influence how Asian airport retailers curate their beauty selections, potentially allocating more space to brands aligning with younger travelers' preferences for discovery and eco-conscious choices.
