Djerf Avenue Establishes NYC Retail Presence

Djerf Avenue, the Swedish lifestyle brand founded by Matilda Djerf, opened its first physical retail location this fall. The new flagship store is situated at 25 Bond Street in Manhattan's NoHo neighborhood. The company reportedly generates $36 million in annual sales.

Matilda Djerf stated that the United States is the brand's largest market, accounting for over half of its business. New York City was a deliberate choice for the inaugural store, following successful pop-up events that demonstrated strong customer engagement and market potential in the city.

From Digital Content to Multi-Category Brand

The brand's journey began in 2016 with Matilda Djerf's travel-focused blog and Instagram posts. By 2018, her online following had grown significantly, leading to the launch of a direct-to-consumer (DTC) website in 2019. Initially, Djerf Avenue offered a limited range of nine apparel items. Since then, the brand has expanded its product portfolio considerably.

It now includes accessories, home goods, and has diversified into the beauty sector with skin care and hair care offerings, evolving into a comprehensive lifestyle brand.

Customer-Centric Retail Design and Strategy

The New York flagship store was designed to offer a welcoming and cozy atmosphere, reflecting Scandinavian design principles. Matilda Djerf emphasized creating a space where customers feel comfortable and at home. The store features high ceilings, large windows, warm wooden shelves, and vintage decor, including items from Djerf's personal collection.

Its location on Bond Street is strategic, positioned between other prominent brands like Goop and Guest in Residence, and near a J Crew specialty store. This placement aims to attract shoppers seeking specific brands while maintaining an inviting street presence.

Implications for Asia's Direct-to-Consumer Brands

The expansion of Djerf Avenue from a digital-first lifestyle brand into physical retail and new categories like beauty offers a relevant case study for Asia's direct-to-consumer brands. This move shows the value of omni-channel strategies, allowing brands to deepen customer relationships and provide immersive experiences beyond online platforms.

For Asian beauty brands, particularly those with strong social media followings or influencer origins in markets like South Korea, Japan, or Southeast Asia, Djerf Avenue's approach demonstrates how community building and understanding core market demand can support significant investment in physical retail and product diversification. This model could inform strategic decisions for scaling and global expansion.
