Selfridges Debuts 'Christmas and the City' Initiative

Selfridges, the UK-based luxury department store, has rolled out its 2026 Christmas campaign, titled 'Christmas and the City.' This initiative aims to transport consumers on a global journey through festive cityscapes and immersive in-store experiences.

The campaign is active across Selfridges' UK stores in London, Manchester, and Birmingham, as well as on its e-commerce platform. Selfridges CEO André Maeder stated the campaign was designed by the teams to foster special shared memories and ensure a welcoming atmosphere for all visitors.

He added that Selfridges has always reflected the energy of urban centers, and this Christmas celebrates both real and imagined cities worldwide.

London Flagship Features International Cityscapes and Dining

The flagship Selfridges store on London's Oxford Street has transformed its 12 windows into scenes from various global cities. These displays include representations of Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, Lagos, New York City, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Copenhagen, Milan, Paris, London, and Vice City.

The store's New York-inspired Downtown Café offers a backdrop of illuminated skyscrapers and a subway carriage for dining. Here, guests can enjoy afternoon tea, classic New York diner fare such as Lox Bagels, Classic Hot Dogs, and NYC Cheesecakes, alongside signature cocktails.

Additionally, The Cloakroom Bar will host a Parisian cabaret throughout the holiday season, with tickets available for select Thursday performances in November and December.

Experiential Activations and New Characters Enhance Campaign

To further enhance the 'Christmas and the City' campaign, Selfridges is introducing several experiential elements and new characters. New York City-inspired yellow taxis will operate across London and Birmingham, while a yellow tram takeover will run in Manchester, serving both the Trafford and Exchange Square stores.

The campaign also features a new cast of characters, including Bellhops and Showgirls, who act as city guides within each store. From 1 December, Santa and his elves will visit stores to spread cheer, while the Bellhops are set to bring charm and theatre to every floor.

The Showgirl character headlines the Snow Show, a Broadway-inspired performance open to all at the London, Birmingham, and Manchester Exchange Square locations. Manchester's Exchange Square store will also host Italian celebrations with San Carlo Bottega's 'The Big Panettone Party,' offering a three-course meal with live music.

Implications for Asia's Experiential Retail

Selfridges' 2026 holiday campaign, with its explicit inclusion of Asian cities like Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Tokyo in its central window displays, reflects a global trend in experiential retail.

For Asian beauty brands and retailers, this initiative highlights the increasing importance of creating immersive, themed shopping environments to engage consumers beyond product transactions. It serves as a benchmark for how global cultural touchpoints can be integrated into retail strategies to drive foot traffic and enhance brand perception.

Asian players considering expansion into Western markets, or those aiming to differentiate in their home markets, may observe how these elaborate activations foster customer loyalty and generate buzz during critical shopping periods, influencing future investment in retail design and customer experience.
