New Campaign Targets Inbound Tourism

China Duty-Free Group (CDFG) recently announced a collaboration with Shanghai Airport Group and China Telecom. The partnership introduces the 'Joyful City Pass' campaign in Shanghai, designed to encourage higher spending from international visitors. This initiative combines travel activities, shopping rewards, and communication services.

It aligns with the Ministry of Commerce’s broader 'Shopping in China' national promotional program, which seeks to stimulate spending by both domestic and international tourists. The campaign leverages China’s expanding visa-free entry policies and Shanghai's position as a primary entry point for international arrivals.

CDFG states this effort supports China’s wider strategy for increased international engagement through cross-sector partnerships.

Incentives Span Arrival to Departure

The campaign provides a range of incentives for international travelers arriving at Shanghai Pudong or Hongqiao airports. Visitors who check in at CDFG’s arrivals duty-free stores and post about their visit on overseas social media platforms receive a bilingual Shanghai Joyful City Pass guidebook.

At Shanghai Pudong Airport Terminal 2, travelers spending at least CNY850 (US$126) at the arrivals duty-free store qualify for a complimentary seven-day China Telecom SIM card. This card offers voice and data services, providing immediate connectivity. China Telecom also operates 'Hello Old Friends' booths, offering interactive digital points for visitor engagement.

City Engagement and Departure Rewards

Beyond the airport, the campaign includes the 'Shanghai City Walk,' an interactive trail for Joyful City Pass holders. This trail guides travelers through key Shanghai landmarks and specific 'Hello Booth' checkpoints.

Travelers collecting stamps at the cdf Shanghai arrivals store, the Wukang Mansion Hello Booth, and the Columbia Circle/Xingfuli Hello Booth can redeem a limited-edition cdf Shanghai Year of the Horse gift. This redemption occurs at the cdf departures store at Shanghai Pudong Airport Terminal 2 before their departure.

A final departure reward allows travelers to claim an exclusive gift at the Pudong Terminal 2 departures store by showing three campaign check-in photos.

Implications for Beauty Retailers

This collaboration by CDFG, a key beauty retail channel, demonstrates a focused effort to capture international tourist spending. For beauty brands and distributors in Asia, this initiative highlights the growing importance of integrated travel retail strategies.

It shows how partnerships with airport authorities and telecom providers can create comprehensive engagement programs. Brands should note the emphasis on digital interaction and social media sharing as drivers for consumer participation and visibility.

The campaign reveals a model for encouraging longer stays and increased retail activity from inbound travelers, suggesting a need for beauty companies to align with similar cross-sector initiatives to access this consumer segment.
