Merz Aesthetics Adopts Skin Longevity Focus

Medical aesthetics firm Merz Aesthetics is redefining its strategy, moving beyond traditional anti-aging treatments to emphasize "skin longevity." This new approach focuses on preserving the skin's health, function, and resilience over an extended period.

Rather than solely correcting visible signs of aging like wrinkles or volume loss as they appear, Merz Aesthetics aims to proactively maintain skin quality throughout a person's life. The company has launched its SkinGivity Solutions concept to support this philosophy, offering a comprehensive framework for practitioners. This shift reflects a broader industry trend towards proactive, long-term skin health management.

Integrated Treatment Protocols

The SkinGivity Solutions concept integrates Merz Aesthetics' diverse product portfolio into personalized treatment plans. This includes injectables such as Xeomin, a botulinum toxin; Belotero, a hyaluronic acid filler; and Radiesse, a calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) injectable.

The program also incorporates energy-based devices like Ultherapy Prime, an ultrasound lifting technology. Merz Aesthetics advocates for a systematic approach, beginning with comprehensive assessments of skin quality, volume, structural support, and facial movement.

This allows for the development of stepwise treatment strategies designed to adapt as a patient's face changes over several years, moving beyond isolated procedures.

Korea's Influence on Medical Aesthetics

Dr. Owen Sunga, Merz Aesthetics' head of Global Medical Affairs, identifies Korea as a key driver in this evolving medical aesthetics landscape. He notes that Korean physicians' commitment to scientific evidence, coupled with the country's highly competitive market, accelerates the transition from standardized procedures to integrated, personalized treatments.

Dr. Sunga anticipates that medical aesthetics will expand beyond skin care, linking skin health to overall well-being. He also suggests that artificial intelligence could eventually assist physicians in assessing not only skin aging but also broader bodily aging processes, paving the way for multidisciplinary "total aging wellness."

Implications for Asian Clinics

This strategic pivot by Merz Aesthetics, with its explicit recognition of Korea's leadership, signals a significant shift for medical aesthetics clinics across Asia. Practitioners in markets like Singapore, Thailand, and China may see increasing demand for long-term skin health plans that integrate multiple modalities.

Clinics could benefit from training their teams in comprehensive patient assessment and multi-product treatment layering, moving away from single-solution offerings. This trend suggests a need for clinics to invest in diverse device and injectable portfolios to meet patient expectations for sustained skin resilience and function, rather than just temporary aesthetic corrections.
