Huelva Plant Earns World-First Carbon Footprint Certification

Moeve Chemicals' phenol production site in Huelva, Spain, has become the first facility globally to achieve ISCC Carbon Footprint Certification (CFC). This certification applies to products manufactured using biomethane, marking a significant step in verifying lower carbon footprint chemical production.

The scope of the audit includes primary outputs from the Palos de la Frontera site: phenol, acetone, alpha-methylstyrene (AMS), and cumene. This initiative provides chemical producers and their customers with a verifiable method to demonstrate decarbonization efforts within their supply chains.

New ISCC Framework for Biomethane-Based Production

The Huelva plant served as a pilot site for a new international certification scheme developed by ISCC. This framework specifically audits products made with biomethane, aiming to establish transparency, reproducibility, and credibility in product carbon footprint assessments.

Moeve Chemicals contributed its Low Carbon methodology and expertise to the development of this new certification. According to Alfredo Lopez, Global Head of Safety, Energy & Sustainability at Moeve Chemicals, decarbonizing the chemical industry requires both production innovation and clear mechanisms to show progress.

Moeve's Strategic Shift to Sustainability

This certification aligns with Moeve Chemicals' broader strategic direction towards sustainable energy and decarbonization. The company, formerly known as Spanish energy firm Cepsa, rebranded to Moeve in October 2024 to emphasize this shift.

Lopez expressed pride that Moeve's experience in developing its Low Carbon methodology influenced ISCC's new certification framework, and that the Palos facility was selected to pilot its industrial application. This development helps validate claims of reduced environmental impact for key chemical intermediates.

Implications for Asia's Beauty Supply Chains

The certification of key chemical ingredients with a verified lower carbon footprint sets a new benchmark for global supply chains. Asian beauty manufacturers, particularly those in markets like South Korea, Japan, and Singapore, are increasingly responding to consumer demand for sustainable products and stricter environmental regulations.

This development offers European suppliers of ingredients such as phenol and acetone a competitive advantage, providing Asian brands with options for sourcing raw materials that meet higher sustainability standards. Asian chemical producers may also explore similar certification models to enhance their offerings in a globally conscious market.
