Wittington Buys Boots, No7 Beauty, Thailand & Indonesia for US$8.9bn
The acquisition includes Boots' 250 stores in Thailand and its Indonesian franchise model, with the transaction expected to finalize in early 2027.

Wittington Acquires Boots from WBA
Canadian investment firm Wittington has finalized an agreement to purchase the UK-based pharmacy chain Boots from Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) for a reported US$8.9 billion.
This significant transaction encompasses Boots' comprehensive retail operations across the UK and Ireland, its Boots Opticians division, the well-known No7 Beauty Company, and its entire Asian business portfolio. The acquisition is a joint effort, with Fairfax Financial Holdings partnering alongside Wittington. The deal is currently on track to conclude during the first quarter of 2027.
Boots' Asia Footprint
The acquisition extends Wittington's influence into Asia's dynamic beauty and wellness retail sector through Boots' established regional network. Boots currently operates a substantial 250 retail locations throughout Thailand, providing a wide reach for its health, wellness, and beauty offerings.
In Indonesia, the company maintains its presence through a franchise model, adapting to local market conditions. This existing infrastructure gives Wittington an immediate and significant platform in key Southeast Asian markets, integrating both health and beauty retail channels.
Leadership and Strategic Vision
Upon the completion of the acquisition, Galen Weston, who serves as Wittington's chairman, will assume the chairmanship of Boots. Mr. Weston conveyed his deep respect for Boots' enduring legacy and its strong market position, indicating a clear intent to enhance the business.
He stated that Wittington identifies a meaningful chance to improve the company through stable, long-term ownership, further capital investment, and a renewed operational focus. Boots CEO Alex Baldock emphasized the company's daily impact, noting how colleagues help millions achieve healthier lives, building customer trust in Boots' authority across health, wellness, and beauty. He expressed anticipation for maximizing future opportunities.
Consequences for Asia's Beauty Sector
This change in ownership for Boots carries specific consequences for Asia's beauty industry, particularly for brands and suppliers operating in Southeast Asia. With Boots maintaining 250 stores in Thailand and a franchise presence in Indonesia, Wittington's strategic priorities will directly influence product sourcing and category focus.
Asian beauty brands considering retail partnerships or market entry in these regions should monitor how Boots' brand portfolio evolves under new ownership. This could lead to shifts in purchasing patterns or opportunities for local and regional product lines to gain shelf space within Boots' extensive network.
