CTPA Inaugurates Scientific Forum in London

The UK Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA) convened its inaugural scientific conference in London on October 08, 2026. The event, themed 'Aligning Science, Policy and Consumer Perception,' marked the association's first dedicated forum for scientific dialogue within the cosmetics sector.

This sold-out gathering was exclusively for CTPA members, providing a platform to explore the complex interplay between scientific evidence, regulatory frameworks, and public understanding, particularly amid widespread information overload and misinformation.

Key Topics Shape Industry Dialogue

The conference program featured presentations, interactive workshops, and panel discussions covering critical scientific and regulatory subjects for the cosmetics industry. Experts from the UK government, international and European cosmetic associations, beauty companies, academics, journalists, and communication consultants contributed to the discussions.

Topics included how consumers interpret information about chemicals, distinguishing between hazard and risk, and recent developments in science-based policy and regulation.

The agenda also addressed building confidence in animal-free safety assessments, the latest science on UV filters, their environmental impact, and strategies for effective science communication to build consumer and media trust.

Collaboration for Evidence-Based Approaches

Caroline Rainsford, CTPA’s science director, stated the event showed the value of working together across scientists, regulators, policymakers, and communication professionals. This collaboration addresses public understanding of science, trust in evidence, and the role of data in informed decisions.

Rainsford added that open discussion and clear communication are vital when misinformation spreads quickly. The CTPA plans to continue promoting collaboration within the scientific community to support evidence-based approaches and enhance understanding of cosmetic and personal care product safety.

Implications for Asia's Beauty Markets

While held in the UK, the conference's discussions on science, regulation, and consumer perception hold relevance for Asia's beauty economy. As global standards evolve, particularly in areas like animal-free safety assessment and ingredient transparency, Asian manufacturers and brands may face similar pressures to adapt.

For instance, increased confidence in non-animal testing methods in Europe could accelerate their adoption in markets like South Korea or Japan, influencing ingredient sourcing and product development.

Asian regulators and industry players can observe these dialogues to anticipate future policy directions and refine their own communication strategies to build consumer trust in a competitive landscape.
