Pinterest Enhances Beauty Discovery with AI Guides

Pinterest has introduced new 'beauty guides' designed to help users translate visual inspiration into practical application. These guides will augment existing pins with detailed 'how-to' information and step-by-step instructions for various hair, nail, and make-up styles. The feature also includes shoppable product recommendations to help recreate desired looks.

Pinterest stated that this artificial intelligence (AI) driven experience draws on insights from its more than 80 billion monthly searches.

Matt Madrigal, Pinterest's Chief Product and Technology Officer, explained that the guides use visual understanding technology and AI to help users move from seeing a look they admire to understanding how to achieve it, whether at home or by knowing what to request at a salon.

Global Trends Revealed in Sephora Collaboration

The new beauty guides will become available to iOS users in the United States starting 8 October, with plans for expansion into additional regions and product categories over time. This launch coincides with Pinterest's release of its inaugural standalone Beauty Trend Report, developed in collaboration with beauty retailer Sephora.

The company reported that over 85% of Pinterest users discover new beauty trends and ideas on its platform before encountering them elsewhere. The report identifies several emerging trends, including maximalist make-up, pink hair, frosted finishes, bob haircuts, latte-inspired nails, and a 'farm-to-face' approach to beauty.

Key Beauty Trends and Search Insights

The Beauty Trend Report details significant increases in specific search terms. Within maximalist make-up, searches for 'full beat make-up look' rose by 460%, '2000s club make-up' by 184%, and 'bold lip combo' by 121%. Lash-focused trends also saw substantial growth, with 'cluster lash ideas' up 646%, 'Korean lash lift aesthetic' up 436%, and 'dramatic cat-eye lashes' up 415%.

The 'Arctic Frost' trend shows increased interest in frosted make-up (+286%), bleached brows make-up (+53%), metallic lips (+52%), and pastel blue eyeshadow (+51%). For nails, 'caramel nude nails' surged 943%, 'raspberry jelly nails' 828%, and 'iced latte nails' 295%.

Implications for Asia's Beauty Sector

These global trend insights from Pinterest and Sephora offer actionable data for Asia's beauty industry. The notable rise in searches for 'Korean lash lift aesthetic' directly points to the influence of Korean beauty standards and techniques globally, suggesting continued demand for related products and services from Asian manufacturers and clinics.

Asian brands can adapt product development and marketing strategies to align with trends like maximalist make-up, latte nails, and the 'farm-to-face' philosophy, which emphasizes internal and external beauty care.

Retailers across Asia can use these trends to inform inventory decisions and merchandising, ensuring their offerings resonate with evolving consumer preferences on a global scale.
